Heron Viewing by Kayak

Great Blue Herons nest near the mouth of Issaquah Creek as it spills into Lake Sammamish. Lake Sammamish State Park provides a bountiful habitat for roughly 60-100 nests. Early March is the best month to see adult herons busy building out existing nests for their new offspring. Kayaks allow viewers to observe the nesting herons from a variety of perspectives before the spring leaves blossom and hide the nests. Other species of waterfowl and raptors, maybe even a bald eagle may also be seen.

Kayak tours will be led by Issaquah Paddle Sports/Kayak Academy kayak guides and will be presented by a State Park Interpretive Ranger on the water. A short walk for land based viewing is part of the tour. Spotting scopes will be provided for observing the heron nests. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars for wildlife viewing from the water.
